From Place To Space: Andalucia

Traveling is one of the most important sources of inspiration for me. The richness of different cultures, the varying styles in architecture, the specific little details in interiors, the ever changing nature, the savory adventures of local food - all that adds widens my view on life, the beauty that is all around us, and sparkles creative ideas and ongoing dreams. So could there be anything worse than a life without the joy of traveling. In fact, yes there could: a life without imagination.

This time I am taking you for a sunny trip to the southern part of Spain, to Andalucia. Some time ago I spent two weeks traveling this beautiful part of Europe and visited the cities of Almería and Granada. The specific beauty of Andalucia is its splendid nature with snow-capped mountains, rich Mediterranean gardens, a deep blue sea and swell beaches enriched with a yummy cuisine. But above all I was inspired by the region's varied history that has left impressive marks in architecture and lifestyle. The Moorish influence can best be seen in the amazing Alhambra in Granada. This palace is a masterpiece of Moorish architecture with the finest mosaics, enchanting gardens and courtyards, elaborate water systems, carved colonnades, and colourful tiles. Now look at that pic of me sitting in front of those tiles - can you imagine my thoughts? And now have a look at my Happy Interior Blog logo and its colours - I think these tile colours have left a lasting impression on me, don't you agree?

I also love the fact that in Andalucia you can find great examples of architecture and interior design that combine the local tradition and history with a modern approach just like this artist's retreat named 'Welcome Beyond' in the natural park Sierra Maria - Los Velez. In general, Spain has a great deal of creative minds that enrich the European scene when it comes to interior design, furniture etc. How about those amazing creations from the Spanish design company 'Santa & Cole'? Illuminated furniture? Folding coffee table? I'd say yes and yes.

I hope you enjoyed our little voyage and wish you a happy new week!

Home Tour: Romantic Spanish Mansion

I'll tell you a little bit about me and my taste when it comes to interiors: I often love traditional homes, like, I love a classic Victorian house and its interiors. It inspires me (just like Victorian literature). But it does not mean I would like to live in such a house. However, I would immediately move into a traditional house with a modern twist in interior design.

When I spotted this amazing traditional Spanish house with a romantic twist, I instantly fell in love with it and felt the need to share it with you. It is the home of  Spanish fashion designer Jorge Vázquez in the northwestern province of Galicia.

This old rural mansion with its exposed, century old walls literally breathe history. All this is combined with a romantic and eclectic interior design and carefully chosen decoration to underline the house owner's personality.

I particularly love the strong contrast in the kitchen. The modern kitchen with shiny stainless steel surfaces   pops against the rugged historical wall backdrop. Well, I enjoyed this little home tour. Hope you too!

From Place To Space: Barcelona

Here on Happy Interior Blog, Mondays equal to inspirational trips entitled 'From Place To Space'. And this Monday is no exception. Ready? Here we go, destination: Barcelona!

The Catalonian capital and Spanish metropolis Barcelona is one of the most lively and bustling cities in Europe. A rich history, multi-faceted architecture, a vivid art and design scene combined with a Mediterranean lifestyle and pleasant surrounding make Barcelona the place of choice for many people. Names such as Gaudí or Güell come to our minds and the quirky and unconventional facades of many historical buildings in Barcelona, the famous Parc Güell and the renowned Sagrada Familia. These two personalities marked the city's modernism period and defined a unique Art Déco style. But Barcelona has more to offer: the medieval Barri Gotic with the monumental cathedral, the romantic Plaça Reial, the busy Ramblas, the inspiring Mercat de la Boqueria (food market) and the lush beaches in Barceloneta.

This huge variety of styles is also transferred into the city's interiors. Famous homes that are featured in Spanish and international interiors magazines showcase modern, minimalistic homes, mansions with historical details, but also quirky and colourful apartments. In Barcelona, everything seems to work and nothing seems to be wrong.

For a perfect panoramic view head to the Parc Güell or to the top of nearby Montjuïc mountain. And don't forget to enjoy the culinary highlights with dozens of yummy tapas plates, a rich Paella, fresh fish, and the delicious Crema Catalana or Churros con chocolate. Hasta mañana, amigos!
